A hint of the future Centenary programme in Flanders

EN – That’s how they look like. Files, meticulously classified in Veerle’s drawer. What they really are: 23 project proposals for remembrance events in Flanders during the years 2016 to 2018. The harvest of a second call for proposals.

Our first call, in 2012 and regarding the programme of 2014-15, resulted in 75 submissios – a frightening number if you consider the fact that the amount of money VisitFlanders had to its disposal wasn’t that large. And frightening indeed for my colleagues who had to process every individual proposal with the same objective attention: negotiations with the submitter, administrative controls, evaluation of the merits, reports. We ended up honouring ‘only’ the 16 best projects with a grant. On the other hand, 16 high quality exhibitions, concerts and other events is pretty OK for a 2 year schedule. After all, there’s life outside the Centenary.

So, we’re not very disappointed with the number of 23 proposals we received now. But we are curious, yes, absolutely! For Flanders, the content of these files will shape the Centenary years to come. Colleague Veerle started working on them already – in October 2014 we’ll know the decisions.

NL – Zo zien ze er uit. Mappen, zorgvuldig opgeborgen in Veerle’s kast. Wat ze eigenlijk zijn: 23 projectvoorstellen voor herdenkingsevenementen in Vlaanderen gedurende de jaren 2016 tot 2018. De oogst van een tweede projectoproep.

We hadden in 2012 al een eerste oproep voor het programma in de jaren 2014-15. Die leverde toen het beangstigende aantal van 75 dossiers op. Beangstigend omdat VisitFlanders nu ook weer niet zó veel geld ter beschikking had. En beangstigend omdat elk dossier een flinke hap werk betekent: overleg met de indiener, administratieve controle, inhoudelijke beoordeling en rapporten. Alleen de beste voorstellen konden we co-financieren: 16 van de 75. Anderzijds, 16 stevige tentoonstellingen, concerten en andere events gespreid over twee jaar, dat is een goed gevuld programma. Er is ten slotte méér in het leven dan de herdenking van WO I.

Dus nee, we zijn niet teleurgesteld met die 23 nieuwe kandidaat-projecten. Maar wel verschrikkelijk nieuwsgierig! De inhoud van deze mappen zal de herdenking in Vlaanderen in de komende jaren vormgeven. In oktober 2014 vallen de beslissingen.
