Room for a great exhibition
EN – If ever the Belgian nation is tangible somewhere, it must be at the CinquantenairePark in Brussels. The imposing buildings still breathe the ambition of the young Belgian state. The RoyalMuseum of the Armed forces and of Military History could not be located more appropriate.
The Belgian nation – or at least a significant part of it – was gathered there too for the opening of the expo ‘14-18, it’s our history!’. Excellencies of the federal Belgian government, of Flanders, of Wallonia and of Brussels addressed nearly 1000 invitees, while being live streamed on big screens. A lot of powers-that-be attended the evening: high ranking army officers, ambassadors, professors of history and military strategy. Speeches in which well studied words of thanks were exchanged, and inspiring talk about the importance of the Centenary for the next generations. This is definitely an official ceremony in Brussels, the capital of Europe, of Belgium and of itself. No indelicate word is heard, although ‘the elephant is standing in the middle of the room’.
We are toasting on the success of the exhibition in exactly those museum halls where the permanent and world famous collection 1914-18 of the Army museum should be attracting thousands of visitors. However, the museum decided to close down the hall for renovations – of all times in the centenary year 2014. The expo – a private initiative originally planned for a different location – somehow came along to save the museum’s reputation. But there’s a gain for the expo too: its presentation in the immense spaces of the Cinquantenaire buildings, and the use of objects from the equally immense collection of the Army museum lend it a splendour of old nobility, of established value.
NL – Het Jubelpark in Brussel: als ergens de Belgische natie tastbaar is, dan moet het hier wel zijn. De ambitie van het jonge België straalt er nog steeds van af. Geen passender omgeving denkbaar voor het Koninklijk Museum van het Leger en de Krijgsgeschiedenis.
Veel Belgische natie was ook verzameld op de openingsavond van de expo ‘14-18, dit is onze geschiedenis!’. Excellenties van federaal België, van Vlaanderen en Wallonië, van Brussel spraken de bijna 1000 genodigden toe, live geregistreerd en uitvergroot op schermen. Veel gestelde lichamen in de zaal: hoge militairen, ambassadeurs, professoren geschiedenis en krijgskunde. Toespraken met afgemeten bedankingen aan mekaar, en bevlogen woorden over het belang van de herdenking voor de komende generaties. Dit is een officiële plechtigheid in Brussel, hoofdstad van Europa, van België en van zichzelf. Geen onvertogen woord valt, terwijl de spreekwoordelijke olifant toch zichtbaar in de kamer staat.
Want wij klinken op het succes van de expo in de zalen waar normaal de vaste collectie 1914-18 van het legermuseum hoort te schitteren. Uitgerekend in het herdenkingsjaar 2014 zijn deze zalen gesloten voor renovatie. De expo – een privé-initiatief dat oorspronkelijk elders zou plaatsvinden – redt de eer van het museum. Maar hij krijgt er ook iets voor terug: de immense hallen en de even immense collectie van het museum verlenen hem de glans van oude adel, van gevestigde waarde.
