EN – Since tourism organisations have been taking the lead in the commemoration of ‘The Great War Centenary’ in Flanders, tourism as a whole has been suffering severe criticism and impeachment. The loudest and most superficial critics equate memorial tourism with unsavory economic exploitation of the war victims. More subtle, doubts are uttered on the capacity of the tourism actors to behave decently in a field that is considered the ‘property’ of Heritage and Culture.

Every time such comments arise, I lose my nerves. Not because it is criticism, but because the statements are nearly always examples of a still greater simplicity than tourism is accused of. Statements that are not checked with the facts. People or organizations involved are not consulted. The knowledge of what tourism means today is blurred by the stereotype of mass tourism at the Spanish Costas as is was known in the sixties of the previous century. Without much further ado, unchecked opinions are distributed by the media, and offend the professional pride and involvement of many of my tourism colleagues.

That is why the most beautiful moment in my busy month of September occurred during the seminar that was organised to launch Gone West, the art programme of the commemoration in the province of West Flanders. Artist Koen Vanmechelen, much acclaimed and lately exhibiting in the New York Museum of Modern Arts, was interviewed on his sculptural project ‘Coming world /Remember me’. It’s a participative project where people are invited to help creating 600.000 sculptures to commemorate the 600.000 victims in Belgium, both soldiers and civilians. Why this should have an economic dimension, was the question, as if art did not suffice? ( participants pay 10 euro). It took some time before there was an answer, and then the artist said: ” It’s just stupid to act as if the economy doesn’t exist. It is simply a parameter. If you omit it, you’re telling lies, really.”

Exactly. Thank you Koen Vanmechelen. Thank you Marc Reynebeau who asked the question and in so doing made this answer possible.

NL – Sinds toeristische organisaties zo’n beetje het voortouw hebben genomen in ‘100 jaar Groote Oorlog’, krijgt Het Toerisme met de regelmaat van de klok een vracht kritiek en verdachtmakingen over zich heen. De meest luide, en ook de meest oppervlakkige critici stellen herdenkingstoerisme gelijk met smakeloze economische uitbuiting van de slachtoffers. Meer subtiel worden vraagtekens gezet bij de capaciteit van toeristische spelers om iets wat toch erfgoed en cultuur ‘toebehoort’ in goede banen te leiden.

Elke keer maak ik me druk over die uitlatingen. Niet omdat ze kritiek zijn, wel omdat ze meestal getuigen van een nog grotere oppervlakkigheid dan die welke ze toerisme aanwrijven. Beweringen worden niet vergeleken met feiten. Betrokken mensen of instanties worden niet geraadpleegd. Enig idee van wat toerisme voorstelt, gaat niet verder dan het massatoerisme naar de Spaanse Costa’s uit de jaren zestig van vorige eeuw. Zonder veel omhaal belandt de bewering in de media, en kwetst de beroepseer en de betrokkenheid van vele toerismecollega’s.

Het mooiste moment van mijn drukke septembermaand beleefde ik dan ook tijdens de studiedag van Gone West, het artistiek programma voor de herdenking in West-Vlaanderen. Kunstenaar Koen Vanmechelen, ondertussen niet meer de eerste de beste en dit jaar nog te gast in het MoMa in New York, werd geïnterviewd over ‘Coming world/Remember me’. In dat beeldenproject word je uitgenodigd om te helpen 600.000 beeldjes te maken die staan voor de 600.000 oorlogsslachtoffers in België, soldaten zowel als burgers. En waarom de deelnemers daar 10 euro voor moesten betalen, was de vraag. De kunstenaar moest wat zoeken naar het antwoord, en zei dan: “Het is gewoon onnozel om te doen alsof economie niet bestaat. Het is gewoon een parameter. Als je die laat vallen, ben je eigenlijk aan het liegen.”

Precies. Dankjewel, Koen Van Mechelen. Dankjewel Marc Reynebeau die de vraag stelde en daardoor het antwoord mogelijk maakte.
