EN – I’m back from Kansas City, USA. In the company of my New York colleagues I attended the ‘The Great War Centennial’ conference organised by the National World War 1 museum there. The Government of Flanders acted as a principal sponsor of the event, and this went not unnoticed. Koen Verlaeckt presented an appreciated overview of the centenary project in Flanders. Our ‘sites and events’ brochure (and poppy seed parcels) were highly popular with the attendees. My closing remarks (“there is no escaping, you have to visit Flanders in the next few years”) made our message clear. And of course we met some very interesting people to develop future projects with.

Meanwhile, at other locations on the globe, colleagues of Visit Flanders spread the message too. They were present at the ‘Espace Tourisme de Mémoire’ at the holiday fair ‘Le Monde à Paris”. And, important, they organised a highly successful World War 1 workshop at Ieper, where about 50 Flanders museums, hotels, tour organisers etc did business with British tour operators and the like.

The centenary machine is up and running. Few doubt that it will keep going. The questions are rather: how fast and furious will it go. How much effort will it need. Will it cause accidents. And above all: in which direction is it going.

NL – Terug van Kansas city, USA. In het gezelschap van mijn collega’s uit New York was ik op het congres over ‘The Great War Centennial’, ingericht door het National World War 1 museum. De Vlaamse regering trad op als hoofdsponsor en dat bleef niet onopgemerkt. Koen Verlaeckt bracht een gesmaakt overzicht van het officiële herdenkingsproject in Vlaanderen. Onze brochures met overzicht van sites en evenementen (en onze zakjes met klaprooszaad) werden dankbaar meegenomen door de deelnemers. Mijn slotwoord (“u zult er niet aan kunnen ontkomen, u moet Vlaanderen bezoeken de komende jaren”) maakte ons punt nog eens duidelijk. We maakten ook kennis met interessante mensen en instanties waarmee we kunnen samenwerken.

Ondertussen waren andere collega’s op andere plaatsen aan de slag. Ze waren present in de ‘Espace Tourisme de Mémoire’ op de vakantiebeurs ‘Le Monde à Paris”. En, heel belangrijk: ze organiseerden een gesmaakte WW1-workshop in Ieper, waar we zo’n 50 Vlaamse aanbieders (musea, hotels, aanbieders van tours, bussen,…) in contact brachten met evenzoveel Britse touroperators en aanverwante.

De ‘centenary’ machine is daarmee definitief gestart. Dat ze zal draaien, staat niet ter discussie. De vraag is eerder: hoe snel en heftig zal ze gaan. Hoeveel energie zal ze vergen. Zal ze ongevallen veroorzaken. En vooral: waar gaat ze heen.
