The Survivors – Käthe Kollwitz 1923

EN – The woman in the center, black and sharp, stands alone and upright amidst the burden that is surrounding her. Behind her, to the left, the bent and weakened elderly. To the right, mutilated men, blind and begging for help. In the front, children are pressing for a place in the dome of her protecting arms. Like the drawing her life is filled to the brim with caring for the ones that depend on her.

We don’t see her eyes, but her mouth tells of determination. She will care. She will move on. She will not yield, despite. She will guarantee the future, a future that with seven heads is nestling in her arms.

This strong woman, I met her in Berlin on March 9th, in the Käthe Kollwitz Museum.

NL – De vrouw in het midden, zwart en hard, staat alleen en rechtop tussen de lasten die haar omringen. Achter haar, links, kromgebogen en verzwakte ouderlingen. Rechts, verminkte mannen, blind en bedelend voor hulp. Vooraan verdringen de kinderen zich om een plaatsje in de koepel van haar beschermende armen. Zoals de tekening is haar leven tot barstens toe gevuld met de zorg wie van haar afhankelijk is.

We zien haar ogen niet maar haar mond vertelt van haar vastbeslotenheid. Ze zal zorgen. Ze zal verder gaan. Ze zal niet opgeven, ondanks. Ze zal borg staan voor de toekomst, die zich zevenkoppig in haar armen nestelt.

Deze sterke vrouw, ik kwam haar tegen in Berlijn op 9 maart, in het Käthe Kollwitz museum.
